Subject: mark it up yourself!
ok, there are a few things that annoy me on this forum, one of which is the tag system for embedding videos.  the proper tag is [toob] though logically it should be [tube] or better yet, [youtube] though i would settle for [video] or something of the like.  unfortunately [video] is taken and to my knowledge has never been used on this site.  fucking, retarded.  what's more retarded than the tag is that you have to copy the end identifier for the video instead of the url which would be ooooh so hard because extracting KmcPeuf5aXo from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmcPeuf5aXo&feature=pla… with a single line of php is too much work for ok nfg.  really though, why not just allow the copied embed code?  nfg doesnt give a shit but it's still fucking stupid.

"if you dont like it, you can leave!" <-- fuck you, asshole.

suck it.

<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KmcPeuf5aXo?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KmcPeuf5aXo?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

I'm curious, what's the best case scenario here? That you'll antagonize Lawrence into changing his web board software so that he doesn't have to read your complaints any more? Based on some of your previous posts you seem to value honesty in communication, so I'm just calling it like I see it. It's my impression that you might get a better result if you ask for a change politely, or better still if you offer to help by researching plug-ins or writing code. The hard part is being able to accept that you still might not get the result you want.

no, only an idiot would expect that result.  the section is called ranting and raving which is what i'm doing.

while i appreciate your optimism but i've dealt with nfg long enough to know he really doesnt care about usability or compatibility.  very much reminds me of the GIMP developers with their, "i like it, i dont care if you dont" attitude which has resulted in the worst gui known to mankind.

when i ask about changing things i get responses like this:
<NFGmaaaan> here I am, happily not caring about your issues.

i ask and hope for the best but it's just not happening.

Bullshit.  Your issue is silly, you don't like the rules of a place and you rail against 'em because you can.  So what if I chose toob instead of tube?  In ten seconds you'll learn how it works and in ten minutes you'll get used to it.

And I use only the video ID 'cause I'm not a programmer and couldn't work out any other way to prevent the user from throwing in links to all kinds of content.  It's a youtube link, it only works with youtube, and you need to copy a small part of the URL instead of the whole URL.  It's hardly a fucking burden.

that's exactly the mentality of the GIMP developers.

a good way to extract and process the link is to exact it using a regular expression.  this regular expression will extract the part of the link you are looking for.

[.+]youtube.com[.+]v=([^&]+)

you can add additional video types based on whether or not the regex returns a value.

that doesnt make it less annoying.  besides, why not just allow the html code to be pasted in (save javascript)?  do you really think everyone is going to go insane and fuck up the forum?  i can tell you from experience that isnt the case.  check out http://www.fairfaxunderground.com as it will let you post anything but javascript.

To reiterate, I'm not a programmer.  Why would I spend hours fuxxing with regexes when I can just do it my way?  Does your regex ensure the youtube.com is the only domain name in there?  Perhaps someone slips youtube.com into their malicious URL somewhere else, bypassing the point of the check?

It's a security issue, and I'm not a programmer.  I could spend ages researching the ways people could hack the system, or I can prevent it with one easy step.  Guess which route I chose?

The same for HTML.  I might be able to enable HTML in posts, but I'm not about to assume that risk just 'cause it makes you happy.  =P
Just like NFG, but x 9!
