Subject: Kabuto Appreciation Thread
Just before we left the mountains, I found the season's first kabuto mushi (Japanese rhinoceros beetle). This was at once awesome and sad, 'cause while these little buggers are 100% cool, they seem to be dying off. Normally by this time of year we'd have found a few dozen. That this was the first and only, and was so small, was not cool.
Most of these pics show him with the wings out 'cause it's so impossibly hard to get pics like this I tried over and over until I had a decent little gallery. The wings are only halfway out too, 'cause a split second later they're fully out, and they're GONE.
Kabuto, like most beetles, don't really fly so much as crash really slowly. They launch and shoot straight up, then sort of drift into walls, people, curtains and everything else. Clumsy and slow and loud but soooo much fun. They're just the friendliest pets.
