Subject: Stuff I've purchased
Japan is the best place in the world to get bizarre snacks.  This thread is a pointless log of the silly shit I've bought and probably put in my mouth.  There is no point to this, except to bask in the glory that is random edible shit.

First up, three packs of Xylish gum and a bottle of Monster Hunter mana-up energy drink.  The gum flavours, from top to bottom, are:
  • Lime Ginger (Tastes sort of like ginger ale)
  • Aroma Rouge Mint (tastes sorta red)
  • Fruity Mint, updated flavour.  This is the third revision of my favourite gum, and it's much better than the second.

Finally, the Monster Hunter drink...  It was..  Well, it was 100ml, ¥200, and left a peculiar feeling in my mouth for about five minutes, as if I'd just drunk the effective part of a throat soothing candy.  It wasn't unpleaseant, but it was weird enough that I won't be buying it again, even if the price was reduced to something more reasonable.  I mean, this ridiculous drink was 20x more expensive per litre than coke or milk coffee or just about anything else.

Subject: Kirin Nuda - Cool Grapefruit
This was a disappointment.  The bottle looked awesome, and I do love a nice grapefruit drink...  But this was a zero-calorie (everything in Japan is zero calorie now, it's bizarre!) soda water with a drop of grapefruit flavour.  So it was fizzy and basically crap.  But grapefruity.

But the logo is great.

Subject: Blue Cola.
It's stranger than you think.  Unlike the sugar swamp-water that was Pepsi Blue, this is perfectly tolerable.  It's basically ...  carbonated minty blue stuff.

Minty.

I guess that cool blast of icy mint explains the blue colour and the penguin...  Sort of...

[Image: http://nfgworld.com/grafx/photos/Japan2010/BlueCola.jpg]

I can't really recommend it.

Subject: Gokuri Grapefruit.
I love this stuff.  I used to drink it all the time when I lived here.  Given the incredibly rapid pace of change in Japan I always worry it'll be unavailable when I come back, but so far so good.  It's not always in the same place, it seems to shift from one store's inventory to another - but it's so far always here for me.

It's a grapefruit flavoured drink made with 30% real fruit juice, with little pulpy bits as proof of that.  It's delicious.

Subject: MAX COFFEE
Today I bought what looked like the ultimate iced coffee.

I mean, look at it:

[Image: http://nfgworld.com/grafx/photos/Japan2010/MAXcoffee.jpg]

Sadly it was the same over-sugar'd super-sweet crap that most Coke products are in Japan.  I had to mix it 50/50 with black coffee to reduce it to a reasonable sugar level.  Won't be buying it again.

Subject: J-Snax!
Here's today's hoard of j-snax to try and dull the pain and boredom of living in Australia.  Look at the bewildering array of awesomeness:

[Image: http://nfgworld.com/grafx/photos/Japan2010/snax.jpg]

  • KitKat, in FruitMix, Aloe Yoghurt and Strawberry & Cranberry flavours.
  • Dontacos chips, Spicy Chili flavour
  • Doritos, Spicy Sausage and Pizza-la Seafood Italiana flavours
  • Okinawa Caramel
  • Japanese sugar things, with and without raisins.  I dunno what they are but they're GREAT.
  • SCORN, BBQ flavour
  • Crazy Hot Habanero snax, in red and green flavours.
  • Pocky Dessert: Banana cake of chocolate, and custard cake of strawberry flavours.
  • Peko peko soda party.  Who cares what it is when it has a name like that?
  • Black sesame caramels
  • Hyper Black Mint
  • Fit's Gum: Soda & Mint, Mixberry, No Limit Mint and Peach Mix flavours
  • LOOK chocolate: A La Mode, Parfait A La Mode and Baskin Robbins flavours.
  • Toppo - cheesecake flavoured chocolate in a stick.
  • Fran - in three cheese flavours.
  • Crunky: Strawberry Cheesecake flavour

Seriously, fuck Australia.

Subject: A Few Drinks!
I bought these recently.  Some were good, others...  Not as much.

Tea for Sports.  It's basically a sweet iced tea, the kind you'd get in the West.  Not very Japanese, not really remarkable.  I like the design though.

[Image: http://nfgworld.com/grafx/photos/Japan2010/TeaForSports.jpg]

COLA UP!  This queer cola beverage has jelly in it.  Unlike the awesome Fanta jelly drinks released last year (which were awesome) this is more like a bottle of cola-flavoured jelly.  You know those cola-flavoured candies that you would never guess were cola flavoured until you were told they were?  Yeah, like that.  Tingly cola-flavoured jello.  In a can.  They also had grape (very crappy) and peach (excellent) flavours.

[Image: http://nfgworld.com/grafx/photos/Japan2010/ColaJelly.jpg]

Green Cola!  This is actually not green, but a healthy (sort of?) cola for adults.  No caffeine, reduced sugar, etc.  Quite delicious, I bought a pile of them.

Subject: Fanta!
Fanta is big in Japan.  They make the sweetest bubbliest drinks, and they're constantly bringing out new flavours.  Not shown here: Zero Lemon, Zero Cider, Zero Grape (all calorie-zero (ie: diet) versions).

Fanta Melon.  When you get this delightful beverage from a restaurant, it's the kind of vivid green that's probably illegal in half the countries of the world.  In a can, though, it now cheerfully states there's less food colouring than before!  Hence the sort of weak attempt at looking awesome.  Still tastes the bomb though.

[Image: http://nfgworld.com/grafx/photos/Japan2010/FantaMelon.jpg]

Fanta Peach!  Just came out yesterday.  After we leave they'll be bringing out a Fruit Fanta, which will be the first time any Fanta's actually had real fruit in it.  This peach version, while exquisitely delicious, has no real peach in it.

Subject: Becker's Magma Cheeseburger
I was in Akihabara the other day and Zumi tells me about the new Magma Cheeseburger from Becker's.  Apparently it's a chain owned by JR, the company that dominates the Tokyo rail system, which I guess explains why it's about twenty metres from the station exit.

So I had to get one.

[Image: http://nfgworld.com/grafx/photos/Japan2010/MagmaCheeseburger.jpg]

It wasn't bad.  Probably would have been better if it was fresh, but I think while the guy taking my order was trying to remember his English lessons and then confirming with his disinterested manager that he was taking a hundred dollar bill and giving the correct change, it got cold.

By that I mean ¥10,000.

Subject: Three more drinks I tried.
I mentioned Gokuri above.  There used to be a Lemon Gokuri, but it hasn't been available for years.  I heard there was a Pineapple one on sale in town, but couldn't find it.  Yesterday a new flavour was released: Gokuri Apple.  It's the first to stray from the yellow-on-blue design.  Much like the grapefruit one this is a pulpy fruit drink with 40% real fruit.  It's delicious, if you like apple juice.  =)

[Image: http://nfgworld.com/grafx/photos/Japan2010/GokuriApple.jpg]

I also found these two things.  The first is Dodekamin Strong, basically the same potency in 300ml as you get from a 500ml can.  Bottle.  Whatever.  It's a very pleasant, not-too-sweet drink that isn't really like any energy drink I know of.  The Strong version, which I only saw in one vendor in Akihabara, has a Monster Hunter tie-in.  Not sure why, since there's a Monster Hunter drink at sev (though, now I think about it, that's sold out).

[Image: http://nfgworld.com/grafx/photos/Japan2010/DodekaminStrong.jpg]

And finally, Protein Water.  It's basically Calpis, but Dakara style.  Meh.
