Subject: I made something
Today I built a table.  We needed something for guests to use when preparing food for the BBQ, so I grabbed a mess of scrap wood and built a smallish prep table to keep them from using the house kitchen for same.  Sawing through 3-inch square chunks of Japanese lumber is not something I really love doing on a hot summer day, but I lived.

That was pretty much it for the day, really.  Tomorrow we're going to hike up to the water source, trying to avoid wild pigs and other things that'll kill you instantly or faster, in my new boots and pastel-green workman's pants.

Yes, there'll be pictures.  =)

Subject: NFG: Jungle Explorer
So yesterday's jungle adventure was interesting, muddy, and shorter than I was led to expect.  In a nutshell, we hiked 300m into the bush, following a long 4cm-wide PVC pipe to its source.  The path was never a path, I dunno who installed the pipe originally but it seems they just dragged it from point to point and never thought they'd be back.  I followed the boss through the thick foliage and while he hacked at the larger branches I used some long-handled cutters to trim back everything thinner than about an inch.

So for the trip back we had a path.  =)

For some reason, even though he's gotta trek up there two or three times in the busy season, he never thought to do that.

Anyway, we saw lots of hoofprints but didn't come across any of the wild pigs I was told to fear.  Nor any giant spiders, deadly centipedes or anything else more hazardous than slippery mud and stranglingly thick bamboo and vines.

I'm gonna head back and take some pics soon.  Great fun.  =)

Lunch was a very authentic and gorgeous soba restaurant (cold noodles dipped in a weak flavoured sauce).  It was good, but honestly I get better soba at home.  Dinner was some lovely deep fried things prep'd by a very old lady.  Delicious.  =)

Subject: Jungle Pictures
Here's a handful of pics from the jungle adventure.  These were taken within ten metres of the entrance, 'cause I was getting a bit spooked in there by myself.  Within seconds I was getting swarmed by giant buzzing insects (flies?  Angry bees?  Who can tell!) and I started hearing all kinds of noises...  Mostly, I'm sure, my own fear-amp'd pulse.

Anyway, you can see here how claustrophobic the place is.  The path is only visible 'cause I made it so, in places it's much worse, and occasionally it's as open as any less tropical forest.

Subject: MOS Burgers and other strange things
Not much going on today.  Hit the local Family Mart and checked out some interesting products: Tropical Mint Xylish gum (excellent!) and Red Bull - the same, but in a Japanese can with a tiny bull silhouette on the pulltab.  Classy!

Also saw some Sapporo Blue Cola, which looked too much like Pepsi Blue (which was revolting) so I didn't get it...  Probably will next time.

Tried an Ebi Katsu burger at MOS, it was excellent.

Dinner tonight was a raft of things no one thought I'd eat.  I shoveled in the tiny white fish and the queer salad and the strange gelatinous things...  And the verdict?  It wasn't awful, but you won't catch me asking for them again if I have a choice.  =)

And the girls on the beach...  man!  This beach has a reputation as a place to come and hook up, so there's a lot of flesh to be seen.  It's changed from the way it was ten years ago, with more families, but still...  Damn.

I wondered why the weed eater had a sawblade instead of string.
Then I met the foliage, and understood.

Subject: It's so romantic.
Two customers who stayed here nine years ago has returned.  He proposed to her and she accepted.  Tonight they're back, two kids (and their DS's) in tow, for another stay.

Subject: Today I scrubbed everything.
Today was a scrubbing day.  As happens often in this humid climate, we found mold under the beds in two rarely-used rooms.  So I shifted the beds and scrubbed this stuff off - not too much effort, it comes off easily, but four beds and walls and behind the fridges and wiping off the door jambs and scrubbing the moss off the exterior walls...  Then we went shopping and bought some sealant for the table I made, and stopped at two grocery stores, came home and cleaned all the patio furniture and prepped the BBQs and sealed the table and trimmed the grass and cleaned up the edges of the pool and swept...

And now, after dinner, I feel properly tired.  It's only in hindsight I can see why, these little events seemed small on their own but stacked up significantly.  Apparently.

Subject: The view from my window
I woke up this morning for no obvious reason, sat up and looked out the window, and immediately reached for the camera.

[Image: http://nfgworld.com/grafx/photos/Japan2010/Window View.jpg]

A few short hours later it was totally grey, overcast and rainy.  Just as well, we had four hours of scrubbing and other cleanup work to do.  By noon we were all exhausted and comatose in the living room.

Also, my new lens arrived today.  Too tired to do anything about it.  It's heavy.  zzz.

Subject: Pouring rain today...
We had to shift from our room so that a guest could take it.  We've moved our gear to a room with a broken AC - since we spend most days in the main house, we don't really think we'll suffer much.  Only one room to clean, but three to scrub out before the season kicked off (today, more or less).

Raining all day, between a drizzle and real rain, with patches where it lets up, just before starting again.  Weather radar must look like a shotgun blast.

Went out with the camera for a bit, but except for the first image (Showing the road above us which basically reverts to nature 150 metres up) I used the 90mm instead of the new wide-angle.

Subject: What a great day!  Adventures ahoy!
Strange people here tonight.

First, before dinner, we got a call from a guest: they were worried about bees, they'd seen some giant bee nests on the road, and didn't want to drive past.  The boss says "Drive past, they're just bees."  They demanded to know what we would do if they got stung, and he retorted that he was not responsible for nature, and they should just roll up the windows or something.

The next guest calls and they were upset about the width of the road, they were worried their precious Vellfire would get scratched.  The boss had to drive down and assure them it wasn't that bad and geez, get a grip.

First, shortly after dinner, we got a phone call.  One of the guests coming in had gone off the road, a rear tire had slipped into the square ditch that lines so many of Japan's roads.  My guess is he was backing up to let another car pass, and the rear tire went in, and they were instantly stuck.  I grabbed my trusty flashlight, the boss grabbed some planks, and we zipped down the road (nearly going off ourself in our haste, after the rains today made the roads a bit slippery).  We arrived and they were blocking the road, five cars stuck behind them, some of them quite angry about it.

We quickly assessed the situation, threw the planks down, then six or seven of us pushed them out of the ditch, immediately popping their rear tire.  The first thing their dad does is grab the user's manual and try and work out where the spare is.  I took charge, and went to the trunk for the jack and spanner.  Dad meanwhile finds the tire - under the passenger seat, of all places.  He couldn't figure out whether to turn the release bolt clockwise or anti, and I told him which to do.  Then I figured out how the jack worked, figured out where to put it, jacked up the car and swapped wheels.

Then they follow us up, but our way was blocked by another car coming down the hill.  We all backed up, but dad had trouble doing that (probably a bit nervy after the last time, heh).  So I drove their minivan up to the pension, with two women in the van thanking me and saying 'aren't you scared?' while I'm slowly driving up the road.  Geez you guys, it's a mountain road, not a rope suspension bridge.

Later I hear that dad's father in law (which would be one of the womens' dad?) had died yesterday.  And they're still on vacation?  What the hell's going on with that??

Then Zumi overhears one of the angry stuck-behind-dad guests saying "Oh, I didn't expect them to be staying here, I guess we shouldn't have been so angry at them..."  Ya think so, assholes?  Geez.

Meanwhile another group of nine kids wanted a better price.  In fact, they wanted half price.  We weren't full and so the boss was considering it, and offered a little more than half price.  They said they'd think about it.  They called back, now there's only six of them, and they wanted an even lower price.  The boss told 'em no way, and they were all "But you're not booked out, wouldn't you rather have some cheap guests instead of no guests?"  The boss assured them he'd rather have less work to do than sell the rooms so cheap, to which they replied  "But...  we have nowhere else to go..."

Dumbasses.  This is fairly typical of early-twenties Japanese, demanding punks without any real sense that their actions have consequences.  It's a whole generation of assholes.
