According to the South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson, the lack of an 18+ rating for games in Australia is a good thing.

It certainly does restrict choice to a small degree, but that is the price of keeping this material from children and vulnerable adults.  - Michael Atkinson

He goes on to add that he's completely fucking clueless and hasn't seen a video game since his roommate played PacMan back in the 80s.  Oh, and that he's heard of this GTA thing and how it ruined America's economy.*

Yeah I was really annoyed at what they did with Left 4 Dead 2. Cut the violence so much that it was a lot less fun.

It's really a crock o' shit innit?  I love Rebellion's response to the recent banning of Alien vs Predator:

...we agree strongly that our game is not suitable for game players who are not adults," said the developer in a statement.

"The content of AVP is based on some of the most innovative and iconic horror movies, and as such we wanted to create a title that was true to the source material. It is for adults, and it is bloody and frightening, that was our intent. We will not be releasing a sanitised or cut down version for territories where adults are not considered by their governments to be able to make their own entertainment choices."

It's just getting worse.  This SA AG retard, Michael Atkinson, seems to be using the mature games issue as a kind of political point scoring mechanism.  I find it hard to believe any rational, informed person could honestly believe that violent video games could cause over four hundred thousand Australians to go berzerk and slaughter their neighbors, but that's what this jackass said:

Well, it looks like the government is finally starting a discussion on the subject of adult video games.

The cynic in me thinks it's timed to coincide with the dunderheaded decision to launch a nation-wide internet censoring system.  You remember the one, with the secret government blacklists that don't come close to blocking all the child porn while managing to block millions of legitimate pages.

You assholes.  Stop posturing and pay attention, I'm gonna blow your minds: internet filters don't work, violent games don't make people violent, DRM has never stopped the copying of a single thing it purports to protect, and patents prohibit more innovation than they promote.  Now get back to your ivory fucking towers and do some good for a change.
